Have you ever looked across the Bay of Asuncion (best seen from a tall building downtown) and wondered what is out there? The answer? Lots of birds! For their first birding trip of 2010 Guyra has organized an outing to the Club Mbigua, located in the bay. The club is named after the "mbigua" (Cormorant), one of the many birds living in this Important Birding Area. Visitors to Asunción shouldn´t miss a chance to head out to the bay for taste of Paraguay´s natural surroundings. The trip will take place this Saturday, February 13th. A perfect oportunity for a romantic gesture if you have your eye on a bird lover!

This Monday marks the opening of the "Aguas Adornadas; Los Rostros del Río Paraguay" ("Adorned Waters; The Faces of the Paraguay River") photography exhibit at the Centro Cultural de España Juan de Salazar (CCJS). This exhibit offers a unique look at life along the Paraguay River, which bisects the country running from Bolivia and Brazil in the North into Argentina in the South. Flowing past remote ares of northern departments of Alto Paraguay and Concepcion the river is witness to a incredible variety of Paraguayans. From indigenous Chamacoco tribes to Moonies to migrant workers on mostly foreign-owned cattle ranches known as "estancias," all depend in large part on the river for transportation and, in some cases, survival.
Este lunes marca la inauguración de la muestra fotográfica "Aguas Adornadas; Los Rostros del Río Paraguay" en el Centro Cultural de España Juan de Salazar (CCJS). La exhibición ofrece una mirada única a la vida sobre el Río Paraguay, el cual biseca el país al fluir desde Bolivia y Brasil en el Norte hacia Argentina en el Sur. Al pasar por áreas remotas del los departamentos norteños en Alto Paraguay y Concepción el río el testigo de una increible variedad de paraguayos. Desde tribus de indígenas Chamacoco a miembros de la secta Moon y trabajadores en estancias (mayormente con patrones extranjeros), todos dependen del río para transporte y, en algunos casos, para su sobrevivencia.
In "Aguas Adornadas" Spanish photographer Xoan García presents eighty photographs taken while traveling by boat up and down the Paraguay River over the course of the last two years. Some of the themes explored throughout this project include the environment, history, culture, colonization, indigenous populations. Do not miss this opportunity to gain an understanding of this remote area of Paraguay, one with which many are unfamiliar. The exhibit opens at 8pm. The Festival Mundial del Arpa (World Harp Festival) is taking place this week in Asunción. The festival will span from Thursday the 19th to Saturday the 21st and features performances starting at 8:30 each night. As in years past, guest musicians are coming from around the country and the globe, including France, the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Venezuela, Argentina and Colombia. Wondering why is Asuncion hosting a harp festival? Check out this previous post about Paraguayan harp music. The Festival Mundial del Arpa is a perfect venue if you're curious to hear more of Paraguay's love of the harp; international acts showcase other styles and traditions. Tickets range from Gs. 15,000 to Gs. 25,000, a real bargain considering this is a small theater and even the nosebleed section has a great view. Tickets are available at the theater itself as well as all Red UTS stands. Now in it´s third year this has become a very popular event so get your tickets early!

All shows will take place in Asuncion's smartly restored Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theater) located downtown on Presidente Franco between Chile and Alberdi. The Municipal Theater opened in 1889 and was used until 1995 when it was shut down, having been left to deteriorate during many years. Four years of restoration work by the Agencia de Cooperación Española and the Escuela Taller de Asunción brought the theater back to life with beautiful wood floors, original mosaics and exposed brick walls. This Skyscraper City thread has information on the building and its restoration. The building´s bar has a backdrop of a large tiled sheet of marble lit up like a scrim. It is, fittingly, very theatrical. Or perhaps it just feels that way after a bottle of Otro Mundo beer on a hot afternoon in Asuncion.
Todas las funciones se llevarán al cabo en el Teatro Municipal, edificio gozando de una renovación bien pensada. Se ubica en el Centro sobre Presidente Franco entre Chile y Alberdi. El Teatro Municipal se inauguró en 1889 y se usó hasta 1995 cuando años de abandono causaron que se clausure. The International Film Festival is taking place in Asunción till October 22nd! Now is your chance to watch something other than the usual offerings - horror movies, action movies, and romantic comedies. The festival features shorts and full-length movies from 26 countries. In addition to the main screenings there are exhibits on Paraguayan film, selections from the VII Festival Internacional del Cinde Pobre de Humberto Solás, and a series of screenings for children. Paraguayan film review site ElPororo.com is also showing the finalists for Ku´i, their national short film competition.

September 21st is officially the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Spring certainly has arrived in Paraguay - some trees look like they exploded into bloom, flowers hanging from every branch and twig. Naturally the first day of spring is cause for celebration in Paraguay; today is "Día de la Juventud," (Day of Youth). "Jóvenes," or youths, celebrate by exchanging small gifts and having parties. It is also customary to recieve flowers from older family members.

En definitivo la primavera ha llegado al Paraguay - algunos árboles parecen haber explotado, flores brotando de todos sus ramos. In Asunción the Viceministerio de la Juventud is having a music festival all day in front of the Centro Cultural de la República El Cabildo (the pink building downtown - Avenida de la República between 14 de Mayo and Chile). The Municipality of Asunción has also organized the four day "Primavera de la Guitarra" (Spring of Guitars) festival featuring national and international guitar players.

Paraguay is home to a number of ecoregions, each with its own distinct flora and fauna. Unfortunately many of these regions are under constant and increasing threats from mechanized agriculture and livestock raising to illegal logging. The Altantic Forrest ("Bosque Atlántico") is both one of the most bio-diverse and threatened region in Paraguay. According to The Nature Conservancy, "In recent years, Paraguay has experienced the most rapid rate of deforestation in all of South America. Much of this has come at the expense of the country’s lush Interior Atlantic Forest region." Deforrestation has transformed what was once an almost continuous corridor of forrest extending from northeast Brazil to points as far south as Uruguay into small isolated pockets of forrest which are being continously encroached upon.

Paraguay´s 73,000-plus hectare Parque Nacional San Rafael was created in the 1990´s in an atempt to protect this rapidly disappearing ecosystem. In 1997 it was declared an Important Birding Area. According to Guyra Paraguay "San Rafael, located in the southeast of Paraguay, represents the largest continuous block of the remnants of the South American Interior Atlantic Forest (BAAPA according to its initials in Spanish) in the country."
El Parque Nacional San Rafael, de más de 73,000 hectáreas fue creado en la década de los 90´s para frenar la acelerada desaparición de este ecosistema. En 1997 fue declarado un IBA (Important Birding Area) o Área Importante para las Aves. Según Guyra Paraguay "San Rafael, localizada en el sur-este del Paraguay en los departamentos de Itapúa y Caazapá, representa el bloque contínuo más grande de los remanentes del Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná (BAAPA) en el país."

Last night Paraguay´s national soccer team defeated Argentina 1 to 0 in Asunción´s Estadio Defensores del Chaco. Soccer matches in Latin America are taken very seriously, especially when they are played on a national level. This game was even more significant due to the rivalry between Paraguay and Argentina, aluded to at all times by the "barra brava." The "barra brava" is the section of rabid fans who usually cheer and heckle from behind the goal area. They are in charge (formally or informally, I´m not sure) of chanting along with drums- last night they were silent for only 5 minutes throughout the entire game.
Anoche el equipo de fútbol paraguayo ganó contra Argentina 1 a 0 en el Estadio Defensores del Chaco de Asunción. Se toman en serio los partidos de fútbol en latinoamérica, especialmente cuando se tratan de partidos nacionales. Este partido en particular fue significante dada la rivalidad entre Paraguay y Argentina. La barra brava aludió a dicha rivalidad en todo momento. La barra brava es un grupo de super fanáticos que normalmente gritan y aplauden en el área detrás del gol. Están encargados (formalmente o informalmente, no lo sé) de cantar al son de tambores. Anoche estuvieron sin cantar sólo 5 minutos durante todo el partido.

With this win Paraguay has officially classified for the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa next June and July. Travel agencies in Paraguay are already selling tour packages to cheer on the national team throughout South Africa. If you will be in Paraguay during the World Cup plan on catching a game at a local bar to get a taste of "Mundial Fever." Today President Lugo gave all public employees the day off on account of last night´s win. Who knows, if Paraguay makes it to the final everyone might get a whole week off!

This Sunday Guyra is offering an guided birdwatching trip to the Department of Presidente Hayes. Close to Asunción, this area of the Chaco is known as the Bajo (low) Chaco or the Chaco Húmedo (humid). The trip will include a visit to two "estancias" as well as lunch at the Escuela Agrícola, a school where youth from the entire country learn about agriculture. Este domingo Guyra está ofreciendo una visita guiada al Departamento de Presidente Hayes para hacer avistaje de aves. Cerca a Asunción, esta area del Chaco es conocido como el Bajo Chaco o Chaco Húmedo. La excursión incluirá una visita a dos estancias además de almuerzo en la Escuela Agrícola. Dicha escuela se dedica a eseñarles a jóvenes de todo el país sobre agricultura.

In the 1800´s Villa Hayes was the site of a French colony named Nueva Burdeos. It was also the site of one of Eliza Lynch´s more infamous snubs by Paraguayan society. Madame Lynch organized a fancy riverboat trip to visit the new colony, only to be ignored by all her high society female guests once onboard. Furious, she ordered all of the extravagant food thrown overboard and forced her guests to wait several hours before finally docking. Now that´s a tantrum!
En los 1800´s Villa Hayes fue el sitio de una colonia francesa llamado Nueva Burdeos. También fue el sitio de una de los rechazos más conocidos de Eliza Lynch por la sociedad paraguaya. Madame Lynch preparó un viaje en barco para visitar la colonia nueva pero al embarcar sus huéspedes "de la high" la ignoraron por completo. The department is named after American President Rutherford B. Hayes. After the war of the Triple Alliance he was asked to arbitrate a dispute between Paraguay and Argentina over ownership of the region. He declared in favor of Paraguay.

Tourists that arrive in Asunción are often unaware of the city´s cultural scene. Art exhibits, movie screenings, plays, lectures and musical events are constantly set up by Paraguayan cultural organizations and the cultural centers of several foriegn embassies. Most are free or highly affordable and take place in the center of town near the majority of hotels. Some recent examples include the city-wide El Ojo Salvaje photo exhibit, a Godard film series at Planta Alta, a Sonidos de la Tierra concert featuring a recycled instrument orchestra and Argentine jazz band at the Teatro Municipal, and a free concert behind the Presidential Palace by well known cuban folk singer Silvio Rodríguez.

Paraguayans have a well-deserved reputation for being very warm and friendly. Whether it´s inviting you to sit down for a tereré break, helping you figure out what bus to take, or refusing to let you leave without a parting gift, Paraguayans are generally very friendly. If you have been at the recieving end of this friendliness, a perfect time to show your gratitude is the upcoming Día del Amigo. "Friend Day" is celebrated throughout Latin America and in Paraguay it takes place on the 30th of July.

On the Día del Amigo people get together (a "reunión" in Spanish) with friends to share a meal or drinks and exchange small gifts. Coworkers might go out to lunch together to celebrate. Gift giving is informal although some groups like to organize white elephant exchanges ("amigo invisible"). Gifts need not be large or fancy, in fact they are almost always a little cheesy. If you are unable to get together with friends it is important to wish them a "felíz día del amigo" in some form - a phone call, email, or, these days, a text message. To provide some perspective this holiday is similar in importance to Valentine´s Day. So make your list, start composing a text message, shop for small tokens of affection/friendship, and get ready to be friendly!

Ever wonder what is on the other side of the Bay of Asunción? Here´s the answer: birds! This Sunday Guyra Paraguay is offering a birdwatching trip to Chaco´i in the Bay of Asunción. "Guyra" is the Guaraní word for bird and Guyra Paraguay is the main birding organization in Paraguay dedicated to protecting Paraguay´s biodiversity with a specific emphasis on birds. According to the Guyra Paraguay website the Bay of Asunción is "one of the most important stopover places for Nearctic and austral migratory birds." The trip will include transportation via boat, an ornithological guide, and lunch. In addition to birdwatching, crossing the bay also allows you a completely different view of Asunción (without any bus noises). ¿Alguna ves te has preguntado que hay al otro lado de la Bahía de Asunción? He aquí la respuesta: ¡aves! Este domingo Guyra Paraguay ofrecerá un tour de Chaco´i, en la Bahía de Asunción, para observación de aves. "Guyra" significa "ave" en Guaraní y Guyra Paraguay es la organización principal en Paraguay dedicado a la protección de la biodiversidad paraguaya con un enfoque específico en aves. The trip meeting point is Playa Montevideo in Microcentro. To get there simply walk down Calle Montevideo (parallel to Colón) until you hit the water (from Mscl. Lopez take any bus headed downtown that says "Pte. Franco / Colon" such as the 12, or 26). If you feel like exploring Chaco´i on your own boats leave from Playa Montevideo and return from Chaco´i every 20 mins. The fee is Gs. 3,000 each way. We are starting see the first signs of winter in Paraguay. Yes, it is hard to believe but it does get cold in Paraguay. According to Senatur average winter temperatures vary between 50 and 70 degrees Farenheit. This may seem laughable if you are coming from a colder climate. However you should not underestimate the effect of lack of insulation in most Paraguayan houses. Built for hot weather and maximum airflow most houses do not seal well when shut. This is not as much of a problem in Asunción, but in rural areas the difference in temperature inside and out can be minimal. If you are coming to Paraguay over the winter be sure to pack accordingly.
As it gets colder the last of Asunción´s summer nightlife fade away. Despite the cold people still go out and some summer past-times do not disappear with the heat - they still meet up in the ice cream parlors and cafés, perhaps eschewing a cone for coffee and piece of cake. Of course you can still get icecream... in fact, Heladería 4D has a two-for-one special on kilos of icecream (1 kilo is Gs. 40,000) till the end of the month. So if you want to show Paraguay´s Old Man Winter you´re not affraid of him now´s your chance. Just make sure to pray for a warm snap first!

Ya empezamos a ver los inicios del invierno en Paraguay. Sí, es difícil creerlo, pero puede llegar a hacer frío en Paraguay. De acuerdo a Senatur la temperatura promedia de invierno varía entre los 10 y 20 grados centígrados. Quizás paresca algo irrisorio para los que provienen de un clima más frío. Sin embargo no hay que subestimar el effecto que tiene la falta de insulación en la mayor parte de viviendas paraguayas. Construidas para aguantar el calor y máximizar el flujo de aire muchas casas tienen corrientes de aire hasta cuando estan cerradas. El problema no es tan severo en áreas urbanas, pero en el campo es probable que haya poca diferencia entre la temperatura interna y externa. Si uno viene a Paraguay en el invierno hay que asegurase de traer ropa adecuada para el frío.
Mientras la temperatura baja se va desvaneciendo lo último de la vida nocturna del verano. Pero aún con el frío la gente se anima a salir y algunos constumbres del verano no se pierden. Se siguen encontrando en las heladerías y confiterías, quizás optando por un café y torta en vez de helado. Por supuesto todavía puedes tomar helado si se te antoja... es más, Heladería 4D tiene una promoción de 2x1 en sus kilos de helado (1 kilos cuesta Gs. 40,000) vigente hasta el fin del mes. There have been lots of scandalous news stories in Paraguay latelty. As far as most farmers are concerned though, the most pressing news is not Lugo´s latest illegitimate baby, or the bomb scares in Asunción. It is the massive drought that continues to affect most of the country. To give a sense of scale, Paraguay is a little bit smaller than California and a little bit larger than Germany. The Paraguay River flows from north to south and divides the country roughly in half with the more arid Chaco on the west from the lusher Oriental region on the east. Both regions experienced a drier-than-average summer and conditions are worsening because spring has brought very little rain.
On a recent trip to the campo we witnessed the effects of the drought on a small community named Apyragua, near La Colmena, where swampland has dried up and streams have stopped flowing. ¨This is the worst drought I´ve ever seen,¨ said one of the community leaders. According to his mother, the last time the area has gone without rain for so long was during a three-year drought that ended in 1947.
The drought has already severely limited the community´s access to clean water. The majority of small creeks in the area have dried up and what remains is mostly stagnant. Unless they have wells deep enough to reach the receeding water table people walk to the remaining arroyos (creeks) to bathe and get water for cooking and cleaning. In addition they also need to provide water for their livestock.
We stayed with our friend Beth, a Peace Corps Volunteer who has lived in the community for one year. When we arrived her well was bone dry. Alex climbed in with the assitance of a rope tied to a wooden plank laying across the well´s opening. The well was about 18 feet deep and about 3 ft in diameter at the top and 2 1/2 ft at the bottom. Digging for 3 hours with a shovel, pot lid and cup resulted in about a foot of water - just enough to haul up full buckets of water. As you can see in the video we had to wait overnight to allow the sediment in the water settle. This is the 10th or 11th time Beth has had to get her well dug out in the last six months. The going rate for this task is Gs. 10,000 (equivalent of 2 US dollars).
A couple of days after leaving Apyragua there was a storm and rain did fall throughout Paraguay. The next day there was an article in ABC Color titled "Storm destroys crops that survived the drought" about an indigenous community in the Chaco. Sometimes Paraguayans just can´t catch a break.
Recientemente han habido muchas noticias escandalosas en Paraguay. Pero la más importante para los campesinos no es el bebé de Lugo, ni las amenazas de bombas en Asunción, sino la severa sequía que ha afectado la mayor parte del país. Para dar un sentido de la escala, Paraguay es un poco más grande que California y más chico que Alemania. El Río Paraguay fluye de norte a sur, diviendo el país más o menos en la mitad. La zona árida del Chaco queda al oeste y al otro lado queda la región Oriental la cual es más húmeda. Ambas regiones sufrieron veranos más secos de lo normal y las condiciones de sequía han empeorado ya que la primavera en sí misma no ha traído mucha lluvia.
Durante un reciente viaje al campo comprobamos los efectos de la sequía sobre una pequeña comunidad llamada Apyragua, cerca de La Colmena, donde los humedales se han secado y los arroyos ya no fluyen. "Es la peor sequía que he vivido," nos contó un líder de la comunidad. De acuerdo a su mamá la última ves que pasaron por semejante sequía fue durante una etapa de 3 años que llegó a su fin en 1947. El fenómeno de esta sequía ya ha limitado severamente el acceso a agua potable de dicha comunidad. La mayoría de los pequeños arroyos se han secado y los restantes se encuentran estancadas. A menos que tengan pozos lo suficientemente profundo como para llegar al nivel friátco la gente tiene que caminar hasta dichos arroyos para bañarse y recolectar agua. La poca agua que logran obtener es utilizada para lavar, cocinar y también para dar de beber a sus animales.
Nosotros nos quedamos con nuestra amiga Beth, una voluntaria del Cuerpo de Paz, quien ha vivido en Apyragua por un año. Cuando llegamos su pozo estaba totalmente seco. Alex descendió dentro del pozo con la ayuda de una soga atada a una tabla repozado sobre la apertura del pozo. El pozo tenía unos 5 metros y medio de profundidad con un diámetro de 1 metro en la apertura y de 75 centímetros en fondo. Luego de haber cavado por tres horas con una pala, la tapa de una olla y un vaso, finalmente logró llegar a unos 30 centímetros del nivel del agua - justo lo suficiente como para cargar baldes enteros. Como se puede apreciar en el video tuvimos que esperar unas horas hasta que el sedimiento en el agua se asiente. Según Beth, en los últimos seis meses se ha tenido que realizar un trabajo similar diez u once veces. El presupuesto para este trabajo es de tan solo Gs. 10,000 (equivalente a US$ 2).
Algunos días después de partir de Apyragua ocurrió un temporal que dejó caer lluvia en todo el territorio paraguayo. Irónicamente el próximo día apareció un artículo en ABC Color titulado "Temporal Destruyó Cultivos que Sobrevivieron a la Sequía." Algunas veces los paraguayos no logran tener suerte.

In celebration of the recently passed International Woman´s Day (March 8th) the Paraguay Marathon Club has organized the second annual "Carrera de la Mujer." The event, which includes a 5k and 10k option, will be held this Sunday at Parque Ñu Guazu. Inscriptions are open until this Wednesday and the fee is Gs. 60,000. Ñu Guazu means "large field" and that is exactly what it is - a large field with a walking and bike path. The walking path runs by a small lake, a lily pond, and there are two major ¨rest areas¨ with equipment for stretching and snack bars. Many of the trees and plants are labeled so you can also learn about Paraguayan flora while getting some exercise (although the race might not be the best time to do so!).
To get to Ñu Guazu take Aviadores del Chaco towards the airport. Ñu Guazu is on the lefthand side right after the intersection of Aviadores and Madame Lynch... if you reach the soccer fountain then you´ve gone too far! By bus take Linea 30 (Aeropuerto) which goes down Olivia/Cerro Corá in the Centro and then down Av. España and Aviadores.
Drive by museum: while driving down Aviadores keep an eye out for my favorite museum, the "Mini Museo Aeronáutico" set up in the the median.

Ñu Guazu significa "campo grande" y es un nombre apto ya que el parque es un campo grande con senderos para caminata y bicicleta. El sendero pasa por una laguna chica, otra ornamental y hay dos áreas de descanso con equipos para estiramientos y cantinas. Muchas de los árboles y otras plantas tienen etiquetas botánicas asique puedes aprender sobre la flora de Paraguay y hacer ejercicio a la misma ves (¡aunque quizás la carrera no sea el mejor momento para eso!).

Queda a la mano izquierda justo después del cruce entre Aviadores y Madame Lynch ... si ves la fuente de fútbol ya lo pasaste! En colectivo hay que tomar la Linea 30 (Aeropuerto) que pasa por Olivia/Cerro Corá en el Centro y después por Av. España y Aviadores.

Located in a rennovated building in the Centro the gallery has several show spaces and features art you don´t normally get to see in Paraguay. The 8th annual Festival Internacional del Poncho Pará'í de Sesenta Lista is taking place this Friday in Piribebuy (Departamento Cordillera). The festival coincides with the patron saint festivities taking place this weekend in honor of Piribebuy´s Ñandejára Guazú, making this a good time to visit this historic city.
The festival will feature various national musicians including Ricardo Flecha, Giordo Torales, Grupo Generación, and Juan Cancio Barreto who has been mentioned before on this blog and is known for always sporting the traditional "poncho pará'í" (more on that later). Representing the international portion of the festival is Argentine band Aristóbulo del Valle. Dance performances will be given by Grupo Piribebuy Jeroky and the afro-dance troupe Ballet Kamba Kua of Fernando de la Mora.

Aside from music, dancing, and typical Paraguayan foods the festival will feature exhibits regarding and sales of the Poncho Pará'í de 60 Listas which have been made in Piribebuy since the era of Dr. Francia. Traditionally the ponchos are black and white although modern tastes have lead to the incorporation of other colors. Woven out of very fine 100% cotton thread the ponchos are light-weight despite their size. Each has three components: the main body of the poncho, the intricate strip along the entire edge of the poncho called a "faja," and attached to that the fringe.

Tradicionalmente los ponchos son hechos en blanco y negro aunque los gustos modernos han llevado a que se incorporen otros colores. Tejidos de hilo 100% muy fino los ponchos son livianos, a pesar de su tamaño. Tienen tres componentes: el tejido principal del poncho, la cinta intricada que bordea el poncho llamado la "faja," y unido a este los flecos.

In order to make way for Navidad shoppers Mariscal Lopez Shopping is rescheduling the AgroShopping during Christmas week. Instead of being held on Tuesday, December 23rd in the Mariscal Lopez Shopping parking lot it will be held on Monday, December 22nd in the Martel directly behind the shopping mall. Keep this in mind if you are planning on buying fresh veggies for a Christmas feast!

Tonight at 9:00pm Juan Cancio Barreto will be performing at the food court of Shopping Mariscal Lopez. Juan Cancio Barreto is a true Ambassador of Paraguayan music up there with Berta Rojas, Luz María Bobadilla and countless others. He plays the guitar and a mini guitar known as a requinto and has won several awards for his music. He is also, apparently, hilarious. I saw him and Berta Rojas perform together last year and he had the entire crowd splitting their sides with laughter. I say apparently because most of his banter and jokes were in Guaraní. Tonight´s show will include both Paraguayan and international songs. This free event is a great chance to see one of Paraguay´s top musicians for free!

The time has come again for Yataity´s yearly Ao po´i festival! Visiting Yataity offers the chance to purchase ao po'i clothing and textiles directly from the artesanas and enjoy the “tranquilo” atmosphere of a idyllic Paraguayan town. Although ao po´i is sold around the town year round during the Expo most of the artesanas gather around the main plaza and you don´t need to worry about waiting during siesta for stores to open. ¡Ya llegó el momento de la Expoferia de Ao Po´i en Yataity! Una visita a Yataity (oficialmente “Yataity del Guaira”) permite comprar telas y prendas de ao po´i de las mismas artesanas y disfrutar del ambiente tranquilo de un pueblo idílico paraguayo. Aunque en el pueblo ao po´i está a la venta durante todo el año, durante la Expoferia todas las vendedoras se instalan en la plaza principal. No hay que recorrer todo el pueblo o preocuparse de que la tiendas se cierren durante la siesta.
Without Asunción´s middle men the price for ao po´i products is incredibly low, especially considering the amount of work that goes into each piece. Mens dress shirts range from Gs.60,000 to Gs.70,000 and womens tops are anywhere from Gs. 30,000 to Gs. 70,000 depending on the styles. Tablecloths can range anywhere from Gs. 150,000 to Gs. 2,00,000 depending on the size and intricacy of embroidery.

What is ao po'i? ¿Qúe es el ao po´i?
"Ao" (pronounced "ow") means cloth or clothing in Guaraní and po´i (pronounced "poe - e") means fine or thin. Ao po´i developed as a result of the isolationist policies of Paraguay´s first post-colonial leader (and dictator) Dr. Gaspar Rodgriguez de Francia. Without access to imported cloth Paraguayan women had to make their own fabric starting with raw cotton which was spun into thread, woven into cloth and later decorated with embroidery. Nowadays much ao po´i cloth is made by machine but still hand sewn and embroidered. There remain a few artesanas who do the entire process by hand. Be sure to visit the "Tejedora del Poyvi" (poyvi = handmade thread) stand in the middle of the left hand side of the Expo to see truly authentic ao po´i.
"Ao" significa tela o ropa en Guaraní y "po´i" significa fino o delgado. El ao po´i se desarrolló a raíz de la política aislacionista de primer líder (y dictador) del Paraguay independiente, Dr. Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia. Sin acceso a telas importadas las mujeres paraguayas tuvieron que fabricar sus propias telas desde cero, hilando el algodón crudo, haciendo la tela en el telar y luego decorándolo con bordados. Hoy en día la mayoría de la tela de ao po´i se hace a máquina pero sigue siendo confeccionado y bordado a mano. Todavía existen algunas artesanas que mantienen la tradición de hacer todo el proceso a mano. Asegurate de visitar el puesto de la "Tejedora del Poyvi" (poyvi = hilo hecho a mano) en el lado izquierdo de la plaza para ver el ao po´i auténtico.
The fine weave and 100% cotton content make ao po´i clothing ideal for the Paraguayan heat. Most ao po´i is made into women's blouses and dresses and men's dress shirts. Although ao po´i has been in use for almost two centuries it has only recently come into vogue among the upper classes in Asunción. Shopping Británico is largely responsible for popularizing (and exporting) men´s dress shirts made out of ao po´i (they look similar to guayaberas). Designer Cecilia Fadúl has been a pioneer in popularizing the use of ao po´i in women´s fashions from blouses to wedding dresses. Recently Pombero has come on the scene offering modern youth-oriented designs including strapless dresses and tunics.
El tejido fino y contenido de 100% algodón hacen que la ropa de ao po´i sea ideal para el calor paraguayo. Aunque el ao po´i se ha fabricado por casi dos siglos sólo entró en vogue entre la clase alta de Asunción en los últimos años. La popularización (y exportación) de camisas de vestir masculinas de ao po´i (parecen guayaberas) se debe en gran parte al Shopping Británico. Por su parte, la diseñadora Cecilia Fadúl impulsó el uso de ao po´i en los diseños femeninos desde blusas hasta vestidos de novias. Recientemente Pombero se ha hecho sentir con sus ofrendas de prendas modernas y juveniles incluyendo túnicas y vestidos “strapless.”
Ao po´i tablecloths are also very popular - sometimes they are made of embroidered ao po´i and fancier ones are combined with a form of traditional Paraguayan lace known as encajejy (pronounced “en” - enter - “ca” - cauliflower - “je” - hey – “jy”- you).
Los manteles de ao po´i son bastante populares también – algunos son de ao po´i bordado y los más elegantes combinan el ao po´i con un tipo de encaje tradicional paraguayo conocido como encajejy (pronunciado “encaje - yú”).

Getting there: By car drive from Ruta 2 to Coronel Oviedo (about 140km) and then head towards Villa Rica on Ruta 8 for about 30km. Follow the Expo Feria signs to Yataity and head to the main plaza. Guaireña buses run to Yataity from Asunción´s bus terminal several times a day. When you call for schedules make sure to mention you want to go all the way to Yataity (some Guaireñas don´t go through town). Also make sure to find out when the last bus leaves.
Como llegar:En auto hay que manejar por Ruta 2 hasta Coronel Oviedo (apróximadamente 140 km) y tomar el desvío hacia Villa Rica en Ruta 8 aproximadamente 30 km. Sigue los letreros para Yataity y dirigíte hacia la plaza principal. Colectivos Guaireña parten de Asunción hacia Yataity varias veces al día desde la terminal de omnibus de Asunción. Al averiguar los horarios (021 551 727 o 555 112) hay que asegurarse de mencionar que quieres entrar al pueblo (algunos colectivos no entran). También asegurate de averiguar a que hora sale el último colectivo.
Staying there: Yataity is a doable day trip, especially by car or if you take an early bus from Asunción (about 3 1/2 hour trip). If you´d rather take your time you can stay at Granja Ecológica Ñemity at the entrance to town (0971 228 901 or in Asunción 021 512 028). Some people prefer to stay in Villa Rica (17 km away).
Alojamiento: Es posible ir y volver en un día, especialmente si vas en auto o tomas un colectivo a la mañanita (toma 3 horas y media llegar). Si prefieres tomarte tu tiempo puedes quedarte en la Granja Ecológica Ñemity a la entrada del pueblo (0971 228 901 o al 021 512 028). Hay más opciones en Villa Rica (a 17 km).
Miss listening to hip hop music? Jonesing for some break dancing? Then come to "Stay In," the hip hop festival hosted by the CCPA (Centro Cultural Paraguayo Americano) this Sunday! Live hip hop acts and a break dancing competition (or "battle") will make for a very different type of Paraguayan Sunday. Tickets are Gs. 5,000 and the festival begins at 6pm. Come on over and watch someone get served, Paraguay-style!

Actuaciones de grupos de hip hop y una competencia de break dancing (o mejor dicho una "batalla") harán que sea un domingo paraguayo fuera de lo común. Tonight there will be a Peace Corps Paraguay open mic night at Café Sintonía on España and Senador Long (Villa Morra). The event is called "Ahendu" which means "I hear" in Guaraní. It starts at 9:00pm and will feature bands and solo acts from the Peace Corps as well as national acts. There is even a band coming in from Filadelfia (in the Chaco). Cover charge is Gs. 5,000 and proceeds will go Cocumú, an organization run by Peace Corps Volunteers that fosters creative expression among Paraguayan youth by exposing them to different types of art and culture.
Cocomu´s most popular project is Ahecha Paraguay which means "I see Paraguay" in Guaraní. Through Ahecha volunteers are able to set up digital photography workshops for kids in their sites. To learn more about Ahecha and other Cocumu projects visit the Cocumu blog at http://cocumu.blogspot.com/

Empieza a las 21 hs y actuarán grupos musicales del Cuerpo de Paz y tambíen algunos grupos nacionales - hasta hay un grupo que vendrá de Filadefia (en el Chaco). La entrada vale Gs. 5,000 y los fondos recaudados serán puestos a favor de Cocumu, una organización manejado por voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz. Cocomú promueve la expresión creativa de jóvenes Paraguayos al exponerles a diversas formas de arte y cultura.
Uno de los proyectos más populares de Cocomú es Ahecha Paraguay, lo cual signifia "Yo veo Paraguay" en Guaraní. A través de Ahecha Paraguay voluntarios pueden desarollar talleres de fotografía digital para los jóvenes de las comunidades en donde trabajan. On Sunday August 1st, 2004 the Ycuá Bolaños supermarket burned to the ground in what was one of Paraguay´s worst modern day tragedies. Eye witnesses say the owner of the supermarket (which included a food court and play area) ordered all exits to be locked in order to prevent theft as people ran from the fire. Around 400 people died and 500 were injured.
On Thursday, December 4th there will be a screening "Paraguay fue Noticia" (Paraguay in the Headlines), a documentary about the incident and subsequent trial. The documentary, which was recently screened at the Festival Dok Leipzig in Germany, includes exclusive interviews with the owner of Ycuá Bolaños.
The screening will take place at Planta Alta on the corner of Caballero and Mariscal Estigarribia (across from the Chaco Hotel in the "centro") at 8pm.

ABC Color has a website dedicated to information about the Ycuá Bolaños tragedy. It is a little overwhelming both in the amount of content as well as, understandably, the subject matter.
El domingo, 1ro de agosto del 2004 el supermercado Ycuá Bolaños se incendió, desatándose así una de las peores tragedias paraguayas de recientes años. Según testigos fidedignos, el dueño del supermercado (que incluía un patio de comidas y area de diversión) ordenó que todas las salidas fueran bloqueadas para así impedir robos mientras clientes huían del incendio. Alrededor de 400 personas murieron y otros 500 quedaron heridos.
Este jueves, 4 de diciembre habrá una presentación de "Paraguay fue Noticia," un documental sobre el incidente y el juicio subsequente. El mismo fue recientemente mostrado en el Festival Dok Leipzig en Alemania. Incluye entrevistas exclusivas con los el dueño de Ycuá Bolaños.
La presentación se llevará al cabo en Planta Alta a las 20 hs ubicada en la esquina de Caballero y Mariscal Estigarribia (en frente del Hotel Chaco en el "centro").

The Festival del Ñanduti will be held tonight in Itaguá, the official capital of ñandutí. Ñandutí is the name given to a type of parguayan lace work. Most circular designs, also known as "dechados," are inspired by the flora and fauna of Paraguay. I will explain the legend behind ñandutis and how they are made in a later post.
The Festival del Ñanduti will be a combination of ñandutí exhibits by local artesanas and various Paraguayan musical acts.
The festival begins at 9pm at the Club Social Itaugüeño next to Itagua´s church. Tickets are Gs. 10,000. Itaguá is located at km 30 of Ruta 2. For more information call (5294 220-252/ 220-434/ 220-611, or 0981- 474621 to speak with the Cultural Director of the Municipality, Jacqui Villalba.
